I bought a book not long ago " Native American Place Names In Mississippi" It has been a lot of fun to look up all the names of Counties, Rivers, etc in this state.
Mississippi's Copiah County is named for the Eastern Cougar. " koi' panther and "paya" to cry out or scream, thus "Screaming Panther - in the Choctaw language."

We have a few cougars in this part of NC. When we visited the Grandfather Mountain natural preserve on top of Grandfather Mountain (over 6000'). The guide said they were native to this part of the "High Country" I haven't actuall seen one in the wild, but I have talked to friends and co-workers who have.
